Water, Water Everywhere... It's obvious, with over 600 pristine lakes to choose from, a lot of summer fun Highlands-style, centres around the water. If swimming is your pleasure, there are public beaches in Haliburton County and, of course, hundreds of private ones. Our beautiful, clear lakes and waterways offer many fascinating opportunities for snorkellers and, let's not forget, the pleasure that can be had from simply "messing about with boats". Most marinas and many resorts offer rental packages on water craft of all types including P.W.Cs, powerboats, paddle boats, canoes and kayaks. Hook, Line & Sinker... With so much water here, you just know that fishing in the Highlands has got to be great. It is, and a number of professional anglers who make Haliburton a regular destination would agree. They're all here: muskie, walleye (yellow pickerel), rainbow, brook and lake trout, large smallmouth bass, whitefish, a variety of panfish, and even a distinct Highland's strain of lake trout, resembling salmon, in some of our more remote glacial lakes. Fore... The warm sun, a gentle breeze, acres of carefully designed landscapes are waiting to test your skills.. ah, a day on the links. The Haliburton Highlands is home to a number of golf courses, each offering its own special challenges, nestled against emerald forests and overlooking sapphire water. There is serious golfing to be done here, be it a sunny afternoon, a company conference or a week-long golfer's holiday. Peddle through Paradise... In the Highlands cycling opportunities for mountain bike, performance-oriented and recreational riders abound. Rugged mountain biking trails are found at the Moose Woods Trail Centre, Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve, Silent Lake and Algonquin Provincial Parks. There is a user fee for these formal trials. Meets and special events are scheduled at Moose Woods Trail Centre and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve. Blades & Boards... Schussing down a snowy slope, gliding across a frozen lake, joining a pick-up hockey game, descending a hill on a bouncing toboggan, cheering your favorite in a car race on ice or trekking cross-country on snowshoes; this is just a little of the frozen fun awaiting you and your family in the Highlands. Making Tracks... The Haliburton Highlands is truly "closer than you think" when it comes to snowmobiling. In fact, you can leave your car at any number of places and then sled your way to and around the county. With fully groomed trails winding through the spectacular scenery, why go anywhere else? Health & Emergency Services Haliburton County is the proud home of two beautiful new state-of-the-art hospitals. Haliburton Hospital has 13 acute care beds, 30 long term beds, emergency care and rehabilitation services. The Minden Hospital has 62 long term care beds, emergency care, observation beds and a clinical area. |
